Spells of Power: Attribute Enhancers

Among my favorite buff spells from the 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons are the attribute enhancers: Bear's Strength, Bull's Endurance, Cat's Grace, Eagle's Splendor, Fox's Cunning, & Owl's Wisdom. Granted, they probably represented a level of power creep found in the 3rd edition games, but I still like the name and the fact they enchanted something about the character. So! It's time to bring some of those flavors to a minimalist style game for both 1974 Style and In Darkest Warrens. Two expansions to RPG's I like a lot.

Notes

-In this version of the rules the only version of these spells are the touch versions. Mass versions that infuse multiple party members might exist, but require some effort on the player to learn in-game. I.e. they have to find a wizard to teach them, learn it from an ancient spellbook, or do some kind of ritual to alter their spells.

Bear's Endurance

1974 Style

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 combat scene
Save: Negates (Harmless)

Bear's Endurance grants 1d6+2 hit points to the character. These extra hit points should be kept tracked separately and come off first before the target's hit points are removed. Target gains the Advantage whenever making a Class test involving endurance (Poison Saves, surviving a night in the cold, holding one's breath). While this spell is active any healing will extend beyond their true maximum to the new cap established by the initial hit point die roll (thus if a player rolled 1d6+2 for a total of 4, their maximum hit points are raised by 4 until the spell ends).

In Darkest Warrens

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 combat

Test Mind to grant the target bonus hit die equal to half their starting HP rounded up (thus a Mage with 3 starting hits is granted 2 bonus HP). This becomes their maximum for the purposes of healing until the spell fades. The target also rolls twice on any Brawn roll made to test a feat of endurance (holding breath, dealing with poison, surviving in inhospitable environments).

Bull's Strength

1974 Style

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 combat scene
Save: Negates (Harmless)

Spell's recipient receives a d6 to be rolled along with d20 and weapon damage die to be added together for melee attacks. Target gains the Advantage when making any act that involves a feat of strength (lifting something, pulling something, grappling).

In Darkest Warrens

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 combat scene

Test Mind to grant the target a +1 to both Melee Attacks and Melee Damage for the duration of this spell. Any test of Brawn that showcases a feat of Strength (pulling something, lifting something, grappling) is rolled twice with the better result taken. Target can carry more items than normal (15 items instead of the default 10) while the spell lasts.

Cat's Grace

1974 Style

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 combat scene
Save: Negates (Harmless)

Target receives a d6 to be rolled along with a d20 for ranged attacks. The target also receives a +1 to Armor Class and Movement Score due to increased adroitness. Any feat that requires great agility (such as dodging a spell, catching a falling object, a feat of acrobatics) is rolled with the Advantage.

In Darkest Warrens

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 scene

Target gains +1 on Nimble tests when making a range attack. They can gain extra movement due to quicker reflexes and when making a Test involving the Nimble attribute (such as dodging a falling piano, catching a falling object) the target may roll twice and take the better of results.

Eagle's Splendor

1974 Style

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 scene
Save: Negates (Harmless)

Target gains the Advantage on tests requiring persuasion, intimidation, or taunting. Target has an ability to draw attention to them and making contacts more receptive to speak to an enchanted character. Saves involving a force of will (Death attacks, stealing a true name, beguiling) are resisted with the Advantage by the recipient.

In Darkest Warrens

Range: Touch
Duration: 1 scene

Test Mind to grant Advantage on any check involving the Person attribute. NPC contacts and townsfolk are more receptive by this character and success grants a bonus step in attitude adjustment. Characters resisting spells such as charm or beguile gain +1 to their test rolls.

Fox's Cunning

1974 Style

Range: Touch
Duration: Scene
Save: Negates (Harmless)

Target gains the Advantage when making Lore checks. Mages who are enchanted by Fox's Cunning roll a bonus d6 to be added to a d20 roll when making spellcasting tests (such as a roll-off in a spell duel or making a spellcaster check to make a Dispel Magic attempt on a spell or magical effect). Targets also gain Advantage on feats that require logic and raw intelligence (solving an arcane equation, recalling some fact)

In Darkest Warrens

Range: Touch
Duration: Scene

Test mind to enlarge the logic center's of one's mind. Target may roll twice on Mind tests to things such as logic puzzles, magic item identification, noticing hidden doors. A Mage who receives this spell may roll with a +1 when testing Mind on certain magic tests (such as using dispel magic to dispel a magical spell or effect, rolling raw tests to duel a wizard).

Owl's Wisdom

1974 Style

Range: Touch
Duration: Scene
Save: Negates (Harmless)

Target gains the Advantage when rolling to see through illusions, gain some kind of insight, or communing with a higher power. While influenced by this spell, healing spells add +2 to their final result for the duration of this spell.

In Darkest Warrens

Range: Touch
Duration: Scene

Test Mind to grant target recipient certain insights otherwise hidden. They roll twice on tests involving detecting illusion, falsehoods, or communing with a higher power. Healing spells add +1 to their final healing done to a character for the duration of this spell.
