Savage Worlds: Gnomes & Elements

The Four Symbols of Gnomes

For Gnomes, the classical elements are representative of both magic and the four kinds of Gnomes that operate in the world. Each Gnome shares a touch of this energy that modifies them in one way compared to their common abilities. Let's take a look at the four 'Elements' of Gnomes and the traits they share.

Earth

Brief: Earth Gnomes ranges in shades of color with shades of white or light tan in temperate environments, deeper tans in the desert, and shades of green for Earth Gnomes born to forest dwelling kin. Their hair is typically a shade of brown or light blonde, with shades of green for the forest types. Earth Gnomes are known to be associated with the likes of city dwelling tinkers, borderland alchemists, and druids.

Traits

Small: -1 Toughness due to Size.

Low Light Vision: Gnomes halve penalties due to luminosity.

Smart: Begins play with d6 Smarts.

Keen Eyes: Earth Gnomes are known to pick up on minute details. They gain +2 to Notice checks made with their eyes.

Fire

Fire Gnomes are also known as 'Svirneblin' or 'Deep Gnomes'. They are known for having skin shades of black or darker purples with hair colors that include bone white or fiery red. Fire Gnomes are known to mine deep core ores to construct their knives, thrusting swords, and burning head crossbow bolts. Quite a few Fire Gnomes are known to develop psychic abilities. Like Goblins, these psychic Gnomes have a touch of blue pigment in their skin color. Fire Gnomes are also taught self-sufficiency and maintain what seems to be an eternal war against Drow and Duerger.

Traits

Small: -1 Toughness due to Size.

Deepvision: Fire Gnomes ignore any light-based penalties. They are able to see in total darkness.

Smart: Begins play with d6 Smarts.

Survivalist: Fire Gnomes are taught from the youngest age to survive on long range patrols needed in the Underdark. A Fire Gnome begins with a d6 in Survival.

Air

Air Gnomes are not only associated with the element of Air, they are most associated with the properties and powers of arcane magic. It is a common misconception that all Air Gnomes can cast spells. This is not true, rather, Air Gnome apprentices tend to contain more mana energy within them compared to other races or their fellow Gnomes from other castes. Their skin color ranges like their Earth cousins, though there is a paleness to their skin color. Their hair tends towards shades of blonde or white.

Traits

Small: -1 Toughness due to Size.

Low Light Vision: Gnomes halve penalties due to luminosity.

Smart: Begins play with d6 Smarts.

Arcane Touch: Air Gnomes have +5 Power Points to an Arcane Background. This typically for AB Magic, Sorcery, or Miracles. This could also be channeled for an Air Gnome who is an artificer (AB: Weird Science) or utilizes some form of arcane mutation (AB: Super Powers in a fantasy setting).

Water

Water Gnomes are also known as Cove or Shore Gnomes. They do not dwell directly in the water but instead make small communities near the sea. Shore Gnomes skin colors include shades of sea green, light blue, or sea foam white. Their hair color compliments their skin color, unless they dye it.

Traits

Small: -1 Toughness due to Size.

Deepvision: Fire Gnomes ignore any light-based penalties. They are able to see in total darkness.

Smart: Begins play with d6 Smarts.

Semi-Aquatic: Shore gnomes are not truly aquatic, but can hold their breath for a prolonged period of time. Houserule: Starts play with a free d4 in Swimming.
