Monster: Ankheg

Ankheg

Approaching close to the pack animals, Barnabas was still filled with trepidation. Instead of camels, his Orc partner had chosen the large insectile creature that stood before him. Its mandibles clacked and its chitinous legs clicked on the small rocks in the soil. There was bridle, it had no where to go, from their jaws dripped the hissing green acid that sizzled when it struck the ground. Gurnin gestured over his purchase: "They need little water in the desert and they are good about carrying objects without needing a rider to guide them."
"They're bugs," Barnabas said as he looked them over. The Gnome shook his head as another droplet of acid fell to the ground.
"Careful you fool!" Gurnin hissed, "You'll hurt their feelings and it'll make them drip acid more."
"Are they intelligent?" Barnabas asked, his voice denoting a spark of curiosity.
Gurnin shrugged and as he walked he said: "Not sure, but it's not nice to get surly like that."

Brief: Ankhegs are an insectile creature known to be a problem for farmlands, desert trails, and outer regions rather than settled cities. Their chitin tends to be in shades of mottled green, brown, or tan with sharp mandibles and dew claws on its feet. Ankhegs are burrowers and are known to cause sinkholes when they burrow too many times. Their trouble with humanoids stems from them burrowing into livestock to feed on domestic animals, such as cattle. Besides their fearsome claws and mandibles, Ankhegs can also bring their sacks filled with a corrosive acid that they spit at their enemies. Ankhegs are considered intelligent on the level of pack animals. They can be trained as pets or mounts, but their habit of drooling acid has few races offering to take them, such as Orcs and Hobgoblins.
